Photography is more than a hobby for me, it is a passion. From family gatherings, to sunrise's and
sunset's, or just going out to get that "one shot" that makes it all worth while. It is a passion.
As for the image to the right, this is one of my favorite image I have taken of my daughter. It reminds me of an image
taken by W. Eugen Smith. My daughter Jenny, who was at least ten at the time this image was taken, and I went out a
for ride and we ended up at Hazel Bazemore Park. As we were walking through the walking trail I suddenly saw this scene and
told Jenny to just walk up the path slowly. She reluctantly made the walk but the result to me was outstanding. Hopefully
when she views this image as she gets older will come to realize the beauty of this image.
So, next time on your way home from work, or from wherever, just study the sky. The way the clouds are forming,
the texture of the clouds, how they are setting up, and then go home and get your camera. Forget the 6 o'clock news
and just go out and enjoy the sunsets.
A Brief Background
My Mom told me once that photography was in my blood. Her grandfather, Gregorio Ortega, was a photographer back
in the early 1900's. This is when there were no drugstore photo labs, just big old view cameras and negative holders.
As far as I know, he could have been using glass negatives. One of his sons, Lino Ortega, picked up photography also.
He lived in San Antonio for a while and photographed some of the sights there. I am lucky to still have a few of his prints.
And my Dad was always with his Kodak Brownie. He took pictures of many family events as my cousins and I were growing
up. When my parents passed on in 1997 I found several shoeboxes of negatives. Through his efforts I have been able to preserve
some of our family history.
In 1973 I joined the Corpus Christi Camera Club. Since then I have been able to expand my photographic experiences. I have
met many wonderful people in the club since then and I am blessed to call them my friends.
